The ghost could only be one person. Calvin wasn’t wearing the costume he’d worn on the night of his death, just a plain T-shirt and jeans, but I recognised his face without a doubt, and besides, no other ghost would have shown up in the library.

Why is he in my room, though?

The floor beneath my bed gave an ominous creak. “Are you the one who’s been knocking things over in the library?”

The ghost didn’t reply, but when another creak came from below my bookshelf, I backed towards the door. “I’ll be back in a minute.”

I ran out of my room and back downstairs to the kitchen, where Estelle was cleaning up the debris caused by the collapsing ceiling.

“There’s a ghost in my room,” I told her. “I think it’s Calvin Honeywood.”

Her mouth dropped open. “Oh. He’s the one who’s been knocking everything askew?”

“Looks that way.” It also looked as if we owed an apology to Aunt Candace, because even if her mask was cursed, it couldn’t possibly have conjured up a ghost. “I’ll tell Aunt Adelaide she doesn’t need to call the curse breaker.”

“No, I will,” Estelle said. “You should get that ghost out of your room before he wrecks the place. He must be a pretty strong poltergeist to affect the library on that level.”

“Why’d he show up here?” I asked. “I mean, don’t ghosts usually appear in the place where they died?”

“Sometimes, but they often appear in places where they spent a lot of time while they were alive,” she said. “He might have come in from outside too. He died on Samhain, when the veil between realms was thinner than usual, which gives spirits more leeway.”

“I also saw Xavier send him into the afterworld.” How had he managed to come back?

“Ghosts have more power than usual at this time of year,” she said. “That must be why. I’m not an expert, though.”

Xavier is. Not that I could ask him until tomorrow. “I hope his family doesn’t find out. We don’t need Cecilia coming here and questioning him about the inheritance.”

“Oh no.” Her face fell. “I bet that’s why he came back. Unfinished business is the usual reason spirits stick around after death.”

“What? To solve his own murder?” That did sound plausible, but I could only imagine the chaos that would ensue if we added a ghost to the army of Honeywoods swarming the police station—if he could even leave the library, which was debatable. Ghosts were usually tied to one place and were unable to leave. “I guess that’s why the guardian kicked me out of the fourth-floor corridor too. It doesn’t want a ghost getting in.”

“Exactly,” said Estelle. “That makes it all the more important that we get rid of him as fast as possible. Can you bring him downstairs?”

“Sure.”

I climbed the stairs back to my room and found Calvin morosely trying to turn on the light switch without any success.

“My family can help you,” I told him. “Come with me.”

He turned around, and my bookshelf slid forward several inches.
